My MedCline Shoulder Relief System Review After Five Years

A note about shopping: I am a MedCline affiliate and may earn a commission from qualifying purchases through links in this article. I purchased the Shoulder Relief System and original body pillow described here. I have not yet tried the newer Cooling Body Pillow or standalone Side Sleeping Pillow, which I also discuss below.

Before I found MedCline, I tried to build my own version out of couch pillows. I was staying with a friend and could not find a comfortable place for my shoulder. I wedged pillows under my torso, rearranged the ones under my head, and tried to keep my weight off the side that hurt. If you have ever spent a night negotiating with a pile of pillows, you know how exhausting that can be.

When I eventually discovered the MedCline Shoulder Relief System, I recognized exactly what I had been trying to create. I bought the full setup—the wedge, the small insert pillow, and the original body pillow. About five years later, I still have it, and when my shoulder is uncomfortable, it is one of the first things I reach for.

Why MedCline matters so much to me

My hands, arms, shoulders, and neck are how I make my living. After two decades of working as a massage therapist in Charlotte, taking care of my upper body is personal. These are my money makers, as I like to call them, and I want to look after them.

I have had episodes of painful nerve irritation that made sleep miserable. I remember being tired enough to fall asleep but unable to find a position I could stay in. What drew me to MedCline was simple: somewhere for my lower arm and shoulder to go, instead of lying directly on them.

What sleeping in the system feels like

The wedge lifts my upper body, the opening gives my lower arm room, and the body pillow gives me something to settle around. Together, they make me feel supported and allow my upper body to stay open rather than collapsing inward. My best description is almost like settling into a little cloud of support.

That is what I had been trying to achieve with those couch pillows. With the system, I am no longer balancing several loose pieces and starting over every time something shifts. It is a different experience from simply buying a softer pillow for under my head or using a standard body pillow to adjust and feel more comfortable throughout the night.

The thing I would want you to know before buying

It is big. That is the biggest tradeoff for me, and the reason I do not keep the full system in my bed every night. The elevated position also took some getting used to. I felt quite high up at first, and I like my familiar sleeping arrangement.

Mine lives in the closet until I need it. That does not make it less valuable to me. I like knowing it is there when I want to take weight off my shoulder and get comfortable without inventing another pillow arrangement that I have to struggle with constantly multiple times while trying to get a restful night's sleep.

Before ordering, check the dimensions and sizing guidance, think about the space you share with another sleeper, and read the current return terms. A full sleep system takes up considerably more room than an ordinary pillow.

Why I still like it after about five years

With a lot of ordinary pillows, I love them for a few months and then spend the rest of their life fluffing them, trying to get that original feeling back. My MedCline setup has held its shape well through about five years of ownership and use when needed.

The original body pillow is a big part of that. I sink into it a little and it forms to my body, but it has not become the flat, tired pillow I have ended up with so many times before. When I pull it out again, the support still feels familiar. That is a big reason the purchase has felt worthwhile.

Why sleep comfort comes up in my massage practice

Clients often tell me about sitting at a desk all day, feeling tension near a shoulder blade, and then spending the night turning from side to side. They are tired, uncomfortable, and frustrated. What happens between massage appointments matters, too, and being able to rest is part of that conversation.

Comfort is individual. Some clients love the whole system; others discover that one component of the system is their favorite and choose to use it every night. One client likes hers enough to take it when she travels. I appreciate having an option to discuss because I know how discouraging it feels when you cannot find a comfortable position.

A pillow does not tell us what is causing pain. Persistent pain, numbness, or weakness deserves an assessment, especially when it keeps interrupting your sleep.

The Cooling Body Pillow is the option I wish had been around

I love the way my original body pillow keeps its shape, so the newer cooling version immediately caught my attention. I wish it had been available when I bought mine. The idea of that support with a cooler-feeling cover is appealing, and it is the version I would have wanted to consider for an everyday pillow.

MedCline describes the Cooling Body Pillow as having a cool-touch cover and adjustable shredded memory-foam fill. Compared with the original body pillow in my setup, the cooling cover is the feature that interests me most. It is also a separate option for someone who wants a body pillow without bringing the entire wedge system into bed.

I am glad to see more choices in the range. Some people want a full sleep setup; others just want something comfortable to wrap around at night.

A smaller option: the Side Sleeping Pillow

The standalone Side Sleeping Pillow is designed for head and neck support, with a cooling layer on one side. MedCline says it can be used on its own or with its sleep systems.

I like that there is a smaller option in the lineup. The full system makes sense for the particular support I want around my shoulder, but it is a lot of pillow. Someone shopping for a head pillow has a different starting point: this one does not include the wedge or arm opening, so it is worth comparing the designs based on what you actually want in your bed.

Using HSA or FSA funds

MedCline offers HSA and FSA payment options for its Relief Systems. Before buying, check the specific product and your plan's requirements, including any documentation you need. You can find the details in MedCline's HSA and FSA information.

Would I buy mine again?

Yes. It takes up space, and it is not my every-night sleeping arrangement. But when I need it, I am very glad it is there. For me, the value is in having somewhere comfortable to rest the upper body I depend on every day and still being able to reach for that same system about five years later.

You can compare the pillows in the sleep and comfort section of our Wellness Shop, alongside other products I have selected for use between visits.
